A work permit is a document that entitles a foreigner to undertake legal work in Poland. It is issued by the provincial governor competent for the seat or place of residence of the employer and is necessary for citizens of non-EU countries who wish to take up employment on Polish territory.

Within the framework of work permits, there are several types:

Type A work permit – applies to a foreigner who works on the basis of a contract with a company whose seat, branch, plant is located on the territory of Poland.
Type B work permit – applied to foreigners who have become members of the board of directors of a legal entity entered in the register of entrepreneurs
Type C work permit – applies to employees delegated to Poland by foreign companies for a period longer than 30 days. The foreigner is still employed by the foreign company, but performs work on the territory of Poland.
Work permit type D – otherwise known as an export service, whereby a foreigner, is delegated to Poland to perform a temporary or occasional service with a foreign employer who does not have a branch, plant or other organized activity in the territory of Poland
Work permit type E – applies to foreigners who perform work on the territory of Poland for more than 30 days in the next 6 months, and indicate other reasons than those specified for permits type B, C and D.
Work permit type S – a permit intended for foreigners who have been employed in seasonal positions, such as agricultural or tourist work, of a temporary nature (no longer than 9 months)

The issuance of a work permit is usually subject to the employer and employee meeting certain legal requirements, which can vary depending on the specifics of the position and other factors. This is a key step in the process of hiring foreigners and requires understanding and compliance with the regulations governing the employment of foreigners. After receiving the work permit, the original document should be given to the employee so that he or she can open a visa in his or her home country.
